Was this a re-establishment of the medieval statue itself or the establishment in its absence of a modern one? In any case, it's great to see a sculptor among the many Mael-Anfaidhs here, in addition to a sculpture (that is, the statue of Molana's Maol-Anfaidh mentioned in the "Maol-Anfaidh extra reading" section of this forum). There are sculptors in the maternal wing of my family as well, and even my sister Janelle has dabbled -- or rather, chiselled -- in this art ... this silent or unspoken art which poets like Ponge (the French poet Francis Ponge) describe/inscribe as SCVLPTVRE, the two 'V's standing for the unpronounced and/or unspeakable: the actual work of this word. ... Hmmm; ... the silent language of scvlptvre brings me back (via the "Maol-Anfaidh extra reading" section) to the monastic acephale himself -- Maol-Anfaidh of Molana -- and his singular decapitated caption and condition ... that is, perhaps the only word a headless head (chief, leader, maol, mael) could utter is precisely this V (...in French this silent letter would sound the call to live: "Vie!"). This would be in keeping with a Christian convert, since Biblically-speaking we were sculpted out of clay ourselves and given life as such. ... Life imitates art. Ah, scvlptvre.

The original statue can be seen above the High Altar in the Catholic Church at Nettuno, Italy, south of Rome. Robert N Mellamphy was invited there to measure that original& he returned to his home in Ipswich & carved a new one . The Original could not be taken from Nettuno as you can understand. Ipswich was a Shrine Town in Mediaeval days & it is gratifying to see this re-placement Statue being welcomed by the people there to-day. A Bronze Plaque is sited on a building facade in Lady Lane , Ipswich . This is reputed as being the exact location of the Statue deposed by Henry V111 in 1538. Robert N Mellamphy is presently engaged in producing a very large Bronze of Cardinal Wolsey....but that is another story & I am waiting for him to put down the tools & reply to your questions..... After all, I have my own hammering to do ....OUCH !!!! Daniel G Mellamphy
